Reena Esmail
TaReKiTa
for SSAA unaccompanied
TaReKiTa is a refreshing concert piece that effortlessly blends the Indian and Western classical styles. Reena wrote the piece for a Skid Row choir in Los Angeles as part of the Urban voices project. The composer’s scats, vocal slides, and captivating melodies are built on the Jog raga. A pronunciation guide is included in the leaflet, and a video guide by the composer is available through a companion website.
Versions for mixed voices and lower voices are also available.
Reena can be seen talking about the origins of the piece here.

Sing a Song of Joy
This is the short (1’30”), energetic second movement of Songs and Visions of Joy, a 15’ piece commissioned by conductor and Renaissance flautist Nancy Hadden and Psallite in 2015. The first and third movements include a solo flute part (originally for renaissance flute) and several solos. The composer compiles the libretto from a range of sources including the Psalms, Walt Whitman and Emily Bronte. This second movement sets verses from a song by Thomas Campion.
Sarah Cattley
Dormi Jesu
The first performance of this Christmas lullaby for SSAA (duration 2’) was given in the chapel of St John’s College, Cambridge by the upper voices of Granta Chorale. The piece is constructed from irregularly overlapping simple melodic fragments accompanying a main melody sung in octaves.

Ruth Karn
Five Sisters
SSA & piano (with semi-chorus and divisions)
Ruth Karn is a composer who has written piano pieces, songs and choral works. She is also a gifted writer of words for music, whose expressive lyrics match the strongly emotional presence of her musical settings. Largely self-taught, she has pursued a varied career that has encompassed nursing as well as periods spent working within the legal and insurance sectors. On what she is happy to describe as her unconventional musical journey, these have been fruitful diversions nonetheless, for she finds particular inspiration in people, places and events as triggers for her composing, which happens in the interstices of a busy life of juggling professional, family and caring commitments.
